Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah is an American performer and actress. In music, film and television Queen Latifah has won 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nominations, and nods to an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah is the daughter of Newark New Jersey native. Her parents were Lancelot Sr. who was a policeman, as well as Rita, a educator of Irvington High School. The couple divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic high school located in Newark New Jersey. Latifah refers to an Arabic word that means "delicate and compassionate". Her cousin gave it to her in the age of eight. Latifah is 5-foot-10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. In a school production, she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah became a member of the Flavor Unit's original group, which included a number of MCs and DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. Then he gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah at the time, was impressed by her song. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as the first single by Latifah.
